The short answer
A business kiosk or touchscreen is locked down to do one job, such as visitor sign in, customer ordering or staff clock on, and comes back to that screen after a restart. In Adelaide, WaTo Consulting picks the hardware, sets up kiosk mode, keeps the device apart from business systems and documents how to update it.
What does kiosk & touchscreen systems involve?
We start with the one job the screen has to do, such as visitor sign-in, customer ordering, a product catalogue or a staff clock-on point. The device is then locked down so it only runs that app or web page, comes back to the same screen after a restart and cannot be used to browse the internet or reach business files. We also plan the mounting, power, network and how updates and faults get handled once it is in place.
What WaTo can help with
Use-case design
Start with what visitors or staff need to do, not just the screen itself.
Device setup
Configure devices, software and access around a focused purpose.
Secure operation
Restrict the device so public or frontline use does not expose business systems.
Supportable handover
Document the setup and provide a path for changes or faults later.
Who it is for
- A reception that wants visitors to sign themselves in instead of writing in a paper book.
- A cafe or shop adding self-service ordering or an order status display for customers.
- A site that needs a shared touchscreen for staff to clock on, check rosters or follow a procedure.
- A business with a display screen that keeps ending up on the Windows desktop or an error page.
How it works
- We pin down the job and the spot. We look at who will use the screen, where it will sit and what it must and must not let people do.
- We pick the hardware and software. That might be a tablet in a stand, an all-in-one touchscreen or a display on a small PC, matched to the app or web page it will run.
- We lock it into kiosk mode. The device boots straight into its one app, recovers by itself after a power cut and hides everything else.
- We test it like a stranger would. Before it goes live we tap around, pull the power and try to break out of the app, then document how to update it.
Why WaTo for kiosk & touchscreen systems
- We design for the person tapping the screen, including someone in a hurry or seeing it for the first time.
- Public devices are kept apart from the business network and accounts, so a curious visitor cannot wander anywhere they should not.
- One team handles the device, the network connection and the software, so a fault does not bounce between suppliers.
- A local Adelaide team, and when the screen misbehaves you reach a real person.
Kiosk & touchscreen systems questions
Can we use an ordinary tablet, or does it need special hardware?
Often an ordinary tablet or touchscreen is fine once it is properly locked down and securely mounted. Busy public spots, outdoor areas or heavy use may call for tougher hardware. We recommend based on where it will sit and how hard it will be used.
What happens when the kiosk freezes or loses power?
It should come back to its working screen on its own. We set it to start the app automatically and, where the device allows, restart on a schedule to clear glitches. If it still has trouble, we can usually check it remotely before coming out on site.
Can we change what the screen shows later?
Yes. Depending on the setup, your team can update the content or web page themselves, or we make the change remotely. We document how it works at handover so it is not a mystery six months later.
