Legacy system modernisation in Adelaide
For the system everyone relies on but nobody wants to touch: understand it, reduce the risk and make a sensible improvement plan.

The short answer
Modernising an old business system starts with documenting what it does and who depends on it, then fixing urgent risks like missing backups or unsupported hardware. WaTo Consulting, an Adelaide team operating since 2001, then compares keeping, moving, integrating or replacing it, and makes changes in tested steps with a way back.
What does legacy system modernisation involve?
The first part is finding out exactly what the old system does: the data it holds, the reports people depend on, the other software it talks to and the one person who knows how to restart it. From there we reduce the immediate risks, such as unsupported hardware, missing backups or a single admin login. Only then do we compare options, which might mean moving it to newer hardware or hosting, connecting it to modern tools, or replacing it in stages.
What WaTo can help with
System discovery
Document what the legacy system does, who relies on it and where it connects.
Risk reduction
Address the biggest support, access, backup and reliability risks first.
Modernisation options
Compare staged improvement, integration, hosting or replacement without forcing a leap.
Safe transition
Plan change around the business so old knowledge is not lost.
Who it is for
- A business running its core database or job system on a server or Windows version that is long out of support.
- A team relying on custom software written by a developer who has since moved on.
- An office where an old program only runs on one particular PC that nobody dares replace.
- Owners weighing up a full replacement who want to know whether a smaller step would do.
How it works
- We watch it in use. We sit with the people who use the system daily and record what it does, what it connects to and what would break if it stopped.
- We protect it as it stands. Backups are confirmed, access is tidied up and failing hardware is planned for, so the business is safer before anything changes.
- We lay out the options. You get a plain comparison of stabilising it, moving or integrating it, and replacing it, with the risks of each.
- We change it in steps. Each stage is tested alongside the old system, with a way back, before staff are moved across.
Why WaTo for legacy system modernisation
- Old servers, ageing Windows versions and odd custom setups are familiar ground for us.
- We will tell you when keeping the old system running is the sensible choice.
- Documentation comes first, so what the system does is not lost if a key person leaves.
- An Adelaide team operating since 2001, reachable by phone when the old system plays up.
Legacy system modernisation questions
Do we have to replace the old system?
Not always. Sometimes the best move is to stabilise it, back it up properly and move it onto supported hardware, then keep using it. We recommend replacement when the risk or the workarounds have become worse than the cost of changing.
What if nobody has the original installation files or source code?
That is common, and it narrows the options without ending them. We can often image the existing machine, run it as a virtual machine or extract the data for use elsewhere. We will tell you early if something cannot be recovered.
How do we avoid losing data during a move?
By running the old and new systems side by side for a period and checking the data matches before switching the old one off. We take full backups before each step and keep the old system available until your team confirms everything is there.
